This past week has been eventful in Ondo State, with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa taking significant actions that reflect his administration’s dedication to transparent governance, grassroots development, and inclusivity.
On Wednesday, Governor Aiyedatiwa approved the dissolution of the Ondo State Executive Council with immediate effect. The decision exempted two critical cabinet members due to the indispensable nature of their portfolios:
Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN – Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice
Mrs. Omowunmi Isaac – Commissioner for Finance
The Governor directed the affected cabinet members to hand over all government properties in their care to the accounting officers of their respective ministries.
Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude to the outgoing members for their service and contributions to the state’s development. He acknowledged their dedication and wished them well in their future endeavours, emphasising that their efforts have laid the foundation for the next phase of governance.
On Saturday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa participated in the local government election, describing it as a vital step towards enhancing grassroots development and strengthening local governance.
The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the efficient running of the local government system in accordance with the law. He stressed that a robust local government framework is key to driving sustainable development in communities across the state.
Governor Aiyedatiwa cast his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ugbo Ward 4, in Ilaje Local Government area, where he commended the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) for its thorough preparations and seamless conduct of the poll.
“You can see the turnout. People are here, performing their civic rights peacefully without any crisis,” the Governor remarked.
“This is just like a follow-up to what happened on the 16th of November, 2024, where we had the governorship election. The turnout was massive and also peaceful. In fact, it has been judged as one of the most peaceful elections in Nigeria in recent times—credible, fair, and conclusive—conducted by INEC.”
“Taking a cue from that, ODIEC has also made thorough preparations for this day. All the materials arrived early enough. Some people had already cast their votes before my arrival here, and I just did mine. From my observation, it’s not different from the November 16 election in terms of turnout and security. The people of Ondo State are very civil, cooperative, and are participating peacefully without any problems.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in the outcome of the election, anticipating another victory for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“At the end of the day, I believe, just as we had it in the last election when our party was victorious across all local governments, I don’t expect anything less from this election as well,” he stated.
The Governor also addressed the withdrawal of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the election at the eleventh hour, describing it as an act of cowardice.
“For them to pull out at the last moment is cowardice, if I may say,” he remarked. “They participated in the entire process since the election timetable was released by ODIEC, obtained forms, went through the processes, and suddenly pulled out.
“Maybe its fear of losing or logistical concerns, but whatever reason they had is known only to them. Other political parties are also participating, so it’s their choice. The election will still go on.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa praised the people of Ondo State for their peaceful participation in the election, stating that it reflects the political maturity and cooperation of the citizens.
