The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) has called off its industrial action, less than 24 hours after initiating it, following the intervention of Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

In a statement made available to The Hope, ARD President, Dr Olagbe Kehinde, expressed gratitude to the state government for its prompt response in addressing the issues raised.

“We commend the Ondo State Government for their swift and commendable response to the issues raised by our association following our declared industrial action. The government acted promptly, addressing key demands that led to the suspension of the strike within 24 hours,” the statement read.

Dr Kehinde praised the leadership of Governor Aiyedatiwa, describing it as a testament to his commitment to healthcare development in the state.

“We appreciate the proactive and positive approach of the government, led by His Excellency, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, which underscores commitment to healthcare development in the state,” he said.

The association also acknowledged the efforts of key stakeholders, including the Head of Service, the Special Advisers on Labour and Health, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), and the management of the teaching hospital, in resolving the contentious issues swiftly.

Highlighting the achievements that led to the strike’s suspension, the statement noted: Payment to affected members as of Friday, 3 January 2025, providing immediate financial relief. Implementation of the 2024 CONMESS salary structure. Government assurance to pay the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and other benefits in 2025. Restoration of electricity at the teaching hospital on Monday, 30 December 2024. Approval and implementation of the 2025 budget to enhance infrastructure and equipment at the teaching hospital.
