Ondo: Sam Maris University matriculates 270 students, awards scholarships to pioneers

Sam Maris University (SMU), Supare-Akoko, Ondo State, welcomed 270 new students into its academic community during a grand matriculation ceremony held at the institution’s auditorium on Wednesday.
The event attracted distinguished guests from various fields.
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, delivered the matriculation lecture titled “Venturing Beyond the Usual Borders.” He encouraged students to embrace innovation, challenge traditional thinking, and develop skills that would prepare them for future challenges.

Osigwe emphasized that academic success extends beyond conventional learning, urging students to step out of their comfort zones, seek knowledge, and embrace opportunities for personal and intellectual growth.
He highlighted the importance of resilience and continuous self-improvement, stating that those who push beyond limits are the ones who leave a lasting impact on the world.
In a major boost for students, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Visitor to the University, Mr. Sam T. Ologunorisa, SAN, announced a scholarship scheme for the institution’s pioneer students.
He urged them to make the most of this opportunity by fully engaging with their studies and the university’s Entrepreneurship Centre, where they could acquire relevant skills for the future.
Reflecting on the vision behind the university, Ologunorisa described Sam Maris University as a place where knowledge flourishes, creativity thrives, and strong character is built.
He reminded students that their academic journey had just begun and encouraged them to embrace challenges that would shape them into future leaders.
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Francis Gbore underscored the transformative power of education.
He advised students to remain committed to their studies, network wisely, and persevere despite any obstacles. Prof. Gbore also reassured them that education is not merely about certification but about acquiring truth and knowledge, as reflected in the university’s motto, “Liberty, Truth, Knowledge.”
The Registrar, Mr. David Daramola, administered the matriculation oath to the new students, officially inducting them into the university.
Meanwhile, the institution inaugurated its first Governing Council on Tuesday. Former Deputy Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Alhaji Ali Olaganju Olanusi, was appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman. Other council members include Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francis Ayodeji Gbore, Mr. Emmanuel Oluwabiyi, Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonauruogho, SAN, Mr. Ode Okwe, and Prof. Temi Ologunorisa. The university’s Registrar, Mr. David Sunday Daramola, was named as Secretary.
