Ondo to review Criminal Justice Law

By Sunmola Olowookere

Ondo State government has approved the review of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law  (ACJL ).

To this end, it has constituted a Committee that will harmonize the provisions of the law for smooth passage.

Giving this hint was the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir Charles Titiloye during a workshop on effective implementation of the provisions of Administration of Criminal Justice Law held in Akure .

The Attorney-General said that the activities of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee ( ACJMC) has had huge impact on the justice delivery system in Ondo State.

He welcomed the participants and urged them to brainstorm on how to make the ACJL virile and responsive to the needs of the people while assuring that their deliberations will form part of the workings of the committee.

Titiloye expressed the belief that a virile and responsive criminal justice system will ensure that the human rights of citizens are protected.

Also speaking at the workshop, the State Chief Judge, Justice W. A Akintoroye made a call to all to build a nation where peace and justice reign, as peace enhances a harmonious society.

He said that the judiciary was steadfastly working on effecting non custodial sentencing in order to decongest prisons and  police stations.

He decried a situation where people were held unduly at police stations and prisons thereby contaminating those that might have been hitherto innocent.

The secretary of ACJMC in Ondo State, Mrs Bola Joel-Ogundadegbe stated that the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACIL) of 2015 was enacted to fast track criminal justice delivery and that the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee [ACJMC) was a creation of the ACJL.

The secretary of the committee at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Mr. Sulaiman Dawodu disclosed that Ondo State is the 14th state out of 25 that MacArthur Foundation is supporting on the implementation of the provisions of the ACJL.
