Ondo West LG embarks on mass road grading to prevent erosion, flooding

From Akinnodi Francis, Ondo

The Ondo West Local Government in Ondo State has commenced extensive road grading across its towns and communities in a bid to prevent erosion and flooding as the rainy season approaches.

Ayotunde Akinfolarin, chairman of the Transition Committee, explained to Sunday Hope that the initiative aims to avert the potential dangers of erosion and flooding during the rainy period.

He emphasized that proper road grading facilitates the smooth flow of water into drainage systems, thus reducing the risk of flooding and erosion. It also helps in preventing road damage, which could lead to expensive repairs.

“Moreover, it also improved safety. This is another significant benefit. Grading ensures a level road surface, minimizing the risk of accidents caused by uneven terrain,” he added.

Fakiyesi Babatunde, Secretary of the Transition Committee, who represented the chairman, further highlighted that the grading would not only reduce maintenance cost but also foster infrastructural development, stimulate economic growth, and enhance disaster response.

He also pointed out that the initiative would improve safety and accessibility for residents.

“The grading will definitely reduce travel time, enhance quality of life, and increase property value,” he noted.

Babatunde called on the community to contribute to the project, stressing that the government alone cannot handle the task. He urged the formation of road maintenance committees to oversee ongoing road and repairs.

The committees would be responsible for tasks such as cleaning, repairing, and inspecting roads to ensure their proper maintenance.

He advocated regular clean-ups, repairs, and inspections to prevent damage and deterioration, and urged the community to actively clear drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and damage.

Babatunde also suggested collaborating with local government authorities to secure funding, expertise, and resources for further development of community roads.

Communities such as Lotogbe, Orimolade, Warrior/Ajaye, Òpéoluwa, Ajilo, and Oke Agunla have already benefited from the road grading. Plans are also in place to grade rural roads to improve accessibility for farmers transporting goods to the cities.
