Ondo youths receive mechatronics training for vehicle maintenance

By Bukola Olamona
At least 50 youths in Ondo State have undergone specialized mechatronics training organized by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) to enhance their technical expertise in vehicle maintenance and repairs.
The training, part of a nationwide initiative across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, was conducted in collaboration with LAFBART Innovations and Consulting Limited in Akure on Tuesday.
Speaking at the event, NADDC Director-General/CEO, Oluwemimi Joseph Osanipin, described the initiative as a significant step toward advancing the country’s automotive sector.
He emphasized that the program aims to equip technicians with the necessary skills to handle modern vehicle repairs, particularly as automotive technology continues to evolve.
Osanipin also expressed concern over the rising number of road accidents involving tankers, trailers, and other heavy-duty vehicles, citing recent incidents in Niger and Enugu states.
He stressed the importance of upskilling mechanics to meet the increasing electronic demands of modern vehicles.
The Managing Director/CEO of LAFBART, Engr. Olufemi Olafunmiloye, praised the collaboration with NADDC, describing the training as transformative.
He noted that LAFBART has worked with NADDC for over 12 years with positive outcomes.
Olafunmiloye further announced that the company had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NADDC to begin tricycle (Keke) production.
He also revealed plans to establish an assembly line for patrol trucks, small trucks, and buses before the end of the year.
Representing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at the event, the Chief of Staff to the Ondo State Governor, Prince Olusegun Omojuwa, reaffirmed the state government’s support for the program.
He stated that the training aligns with the administration’s “One Youth, One Skill” policy, aimed at enhancing technical skills and creating employment opportunities for young people.
Engr. Adeleye, Director of Ondo State Vehicle Inspection Services, also addressed the participants, revealing that his agency inspects approximately 78,000 vehicles annually to identify mechanical faults.
He urged vehicle owners to conduct regular diagnostic checks to detect issues early before taking their cars to mechanics.
The training concluded with assurances from both state and federal governments of continued support for auto technicians in Ondo State.
