At least one person has been feared dead, and 25 others reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following a violent clash in Ido-Ayegunle, a town between Ijebu-Ijesa and Esa-Oke in Osun State.
The crisis erupted over the weekend after the Osun State government announced Prince Timileyin Oluyemi Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido-Ayegunle in Obokun Local Government Area.
The appointment faced strong opposition from some community members, who argued that the newly appointed monarch was from Ilesa and not a native of the town.
Tensions escalated on Monday, leading to a violent confrontation. According to sources, suspected hoodlums—allegedly disguised as security operatives—opened fire on residents, resulting in casualties.
The violence has spread fear among residents, forcing many to flee for safety. Meanwhile, students of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, have been placed on high alert as tensions extend to neighboring communities.
Community leaders and residents have urged the state government to intervene urgently to prevent further violence.
