The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has expressed concern over the low registration rate for the National Identity Number (NIN), revealing that only 60 percent of Ondo State’s population has been captured.
The Commission disclosed that out of over five million residents in the state, three million have registered. It however noted that a significant number of these individuals are visitors who completed the process due to Ondo’s efficient system.
NIMC Coordinator in Ondo State, Dr Wura Akinrinola in an interview with The Hope, emphasised the urgent need for more residents, particularly parents, to participate in the ongoing registration exercise.
Akinrinola also hinted on the importance of the e-birth registration currently underway, noting that it will facilitate seamless access to future social amenities for registered children.
She stressed that this is essential to ensure their children are eligible for critical government services such as healthcare and educational scholarships.
“Parents must act swiftly to ensure their names are properly linked to their children’s records,” Akinrinola said. “Without this, children cannot receive birth certificates, which are fundamental for accessing government programmes.”
She also urged parents and residents to utilise the Commission’s mobile application, which simplifies the process of updating personal information such as names, addresses, and dates of birth without the need to visit NIMC offices.
According to her, users can easily modify their details and download NIN slips directly from the app.
“The mobile app has made the process much easier,” she noted. “Corrections or updates can be completed within minutes, reducing the need for queues at our offices.”
Akinrinola encouraged residents to visit the NIMC website, www.nimc.gov.ng, to make any necessary changes to their personal information, stressing that accurate records are crucial for future access to official services.
She added that the availability of self-service options via the app has significantly reduced congestion at NIMC’s offices, allowing for quicker processing for those who still require in-person services.
The NIMC boss urged Nigerians not to wait until the need for these documents becomes urgent. “It is better to get it done now than to rush at the last minute,” she advised.
