Ortom slams critics of Volunteer Guards initiative
By Henry Iyorkase, Makurdi
The immediate past Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has urged the barrage of critics who have been condemning the duplication of the Community Volunteer Guards, which were established during his tenure in the state.
The former Governor made the appeal through his media aide, Mr. Terver Akase, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday in Makurdi, Benue State.
Ortom was quoted as urging those who have expressed concerns through conventional platforms to put the matter behind them and support the current administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia.
He reminded them that everything on earth has a time limit.
Chief Ortom pointed out that Governor Alia, a fortnight ago, launched the State Civil Protection Guards, known as “Anyam Nyor.”
Some individuals have suggested that the current dispensation merely renamed the Community Volunteer Guards, a legacy of Ortom’s administration.
The former Governor acknowledged and deeply appreciated all those who have engaged in passionate discussions about the issue but appealed to them to sheathe their swords and allow peace to prevail.
He noted that while it is natural to have differing opinions on governance and the state’s direction, it is important for people to remember that government is a dynamic, evolving system.
He further explained that the State Executive Council, in collaboration with the House of Assembly, has the constitutional authority to make laws and amend existing ones to address developmental issues at any given time.
Chief Ortom appealed to the people of the state to support Governor Alia’s leadership and pray for the success of the present administration, as it will ultimately benefit everyone, including himself.
Reflecting on his two terms as Governor, Ortom reiterated his dedication to serving the people of Benue State, guided by a deep commitment to their welfare and the protection of the land.
“I have no regrets about my commitment and the sacrifices I made to defend Benue people against oppression and external interests that sought to undermine our rights and heritage as a people. My actions were always motivated by a desire to uplift our people, secure our God-given land, and ensure a bright future for generations to come.
The establishment of the Community Volunteer Guards, Livestock Guards, and the enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law were results of our pact with the people to always be on their side, as God Almighty was directing me.”
He further stated that it is essential to acknowledge that the circumstances and economic realities during his administration differ from those of Governor Alia’s time.
He emphasised that each leader faces unique challenges, and it is crucial for the people to respect this fact and engage in constructive dialogue at all times.
The former Governor expressed hope for a collaborative spirit, where the state can build on the progress made and continue fostering development for the people.
“I encourage all Benue people to refrain from hostility and divisive commentaries in the media. Instead, let us rally round our Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, offering support and constructive criticism. It is imperative that we stand together as one people, united by our shared aspirations for growth and development.”
Chief Ortom also urged the people to desist from casting aspersions on traditional rulers in the state, stressing that the Royal Fathers deserve respect as custodians of the cultural heritage of the state.
He wished Governor Alia the best and prayed that God grants him wisdom as he tackles the development challenges facing the state.
The former Governor, in the same vein, prayed for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, urging the people of the state to support him in his role within the administration of President Bola Tinubu and for the success of the entire nation.
