After years of moribund, the Olympic size swimming pool at the Ondo State Sports Complex has come back to life.
In a chat with Sporting Hope, General Manager, State Sports Council, Mr Henry Omoyele Babatunde said his target was to give facilities at the complex a facelift.
Babatunde added that having brought the pool back to life, with measure in place to ensure proper maintenance, the next thing is to move into the indoor sports hall and fix the leaking roofs and put the floor in a normal condition to be conducive for the athletes training.
“The pool was green, it’s now a blue swimming pool.”
He said, “we are aware that government cannot do it all, so we have been involving some sports enthusiasts to assist us, in the next couple of weeks, the roofing will be completed.”
“For us to develop holistically, we need to do a lot of face lifting for our facilities, that is why I’m commending the state Governor for earmarking money for capital project in our 2021 budget.”
“We are able to do the little we did through direct labour because we didn’t have money to be awarding contracts and we want result, that is why we make do with direct labour, everything we are doing here is through direct labour,” he said.
“We have been able to renovate the four boreholes at the pool side, installed solar light across the council, renovated the Chairman and General Manager’s offices through direct labour.
He said plans were on to reward the state contingent, we have submitted our report and the government is willing to do the needful.
Recalled that Ondo State Deputy Governor promised to give the state’s contingent heroic welcome when he visited their camp at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) while the game was on.
The General Manager said his management is working hard to ensure the payment of the athletes allowance in order to serve as a morale booster for them to prepare for the next festival coming up in Delta State.
