The Osun State Government has reiterated its commitment to curbing substance abuse among youths and public workers through a strategic partnership with the Drug-Free Project, a national initiative promoting a drug-free society.
The Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, made this known while receiving a delegation from the Drug-Free Project led by its Project Officer, Mr Ifeoluwayinka Bamidele.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Cabinet, Special Services and Office of the SSG, Mr Olusoji Wojuade, Igbalaye expressed concern over the rising rate of drug abuse among Nigerian youths.
He commended the initiative and assured that the Osun State Government was fully prepared to collaborate on effective strategies to combat the menace.
“The Osun State Government is ready to partner with any organisation committed to safeguarding our youth and ensuring a healthy future for our state,” Igbalaye stated.
In his remarks, Mr Bamidele thanked the state government for its support, describing it as a major milestone in the ongoing effort to build a drug-free society.
He explained that the Drug-Free Project had been operational for 120 days, covering six states in the South-West and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with plans to expand to all 36 states of the federation.
Both parties, during the meeting, highlighted the need for sustained engagement, particularly in the wake of a recent tragic incident involving the death of a student linked to substance abuse.
As part of the action plan, the Osun State Government and the Drug-Free Project agreed to: Establish drug-free clubs in secondary schools across the state, develop a substance abuse policy for state employees, and open a Drug-Free Project office in Osogbo, the state capital.
The partnership represents a renewed effort by the Osun State Government to tackle the growing challenge of drug abuse and promote healthier lifestyles among its citizens.
