The Joint Labour Movement in Osun State comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) has raised alarm over what it described as ongoing witch-hunting and threats against trade union leaders in the state.
In a strongly worded joint statement signed by Comrade (Dr.) Christopher Arapasopo, Chairperson of the NLC; Comrade ’Bimbo Fasasi, Chairman of the TUC; and Comrade Lekan Adediran, Chairman of the JNPSNC, the unions warned that any form of harassment, intimidation, or arrest of labour leaders would be met with strong resistance.
The statement condemned what the unions termed a “calculated attempt to weaken and destabilise the labour movement” through the planned humiliation and persecution of key union figures.
“We will not sit idly by while the rights and freedoms of our members are trampled upon with impunity by agencies that are supposed to uphold the law,” the statement read.
“The Labour Movement will not hesitate to embark on necessary industrial actions to protect the integrity and independence of organised labour in Osun State.”
The Joint Labour Movement also called on security agencies to guarantee the safety of all workers, union leaders, and affiliates across the state. It stressed that labour must be allowed to operate without fear of violence or retribution.
In addition, the unions rejected moves to force workers to resume duties at local government council secretariats, arguing that current security conditions do not guarantee their safety.
Reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of workers and the broader populace, the movement vowed not to be silenced or intimidated.
“We remain resolute in our mission to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved state,” the statement concluded.
