Osun NPC flags off 2024 study on Maternal and Child mortality

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

The Federal Commissioner representing Osun State at the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Amidu Raheem Tadese, has officially launched the 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) Study in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

He assured that the Commission would spare no effort in providing valuable information to help reduce the preventable causes of maternal and child mortality in the state.

Dr Tadese emphasised that the NPC would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities and agencies, particularly the Federal Ministry of Health, to address this pressing issue.

Speaking to journalists during the flag-off ceremony, held at the Osun State NPC Secretariat in Osogbo, Tadese explained that the study is designed to provide insights into the causes of under-five and maternal deaths within communities.

According to him, the nationwide study is being conducted by the NPC in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health to generate data that will inform health policies and interventions aimed at reducing preventable deaths.

The former Osun lawmaker noted that the study will focus on collecting essential data about maternal and child mortality, with a particular emphasis on the social and health-related factors contributing to these tragic losses.

“In Osun State, we have benefited from a strong partnership between the National Population Commission, the Federal Ministry of Health, and our valued partners to successfully implement health-related projects in the past. We are confident that this collaboration will once again ensure the success of the VASA Study,” Tadese said.

“This study will collect critical data on maternal and child mortality, focusing on the social and health-related factors that contribute to these tragic losses. This information will empower decision-makers to address the root causes of these unnecessary deaths and guide policies to improve maternal and child health in the state and beyond.”

He further announced that fieldwork for the study would take place in selected communities across the state between 4 November and 15 December 2024.

Dr Tadese stated that NPC-trained data collectors would visit households to conduct interviews with family members, gathering information to help the Commission better understand the circumstances surrounding maternal and child deaths.

He called on residents, particularly traditional rulers and community leaders, to support the Commission in ensuring a smooth, hitch-free, and seamless exercise across the selected councils in the state.

“These sensitive but essential processes require the cooperation and support of every individual and community. We recognise the vital role that traditional and community leaders play in mobilising support and facilitating the smooth conduct of activities like the VASA Study.

“We appeal to our revered leaders to lend their voices in support of this study, encouraging their communities to welcome the interviewers and participate fully in the process. Your leadership is invaluable in ensuring that this study is well-received and that the information gathered reflects the realities and challenges within our communities.”
