Osun partners DTT to check quack, unfit drivers
By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo
The Osun Government, on Wednesday, said it is partnering with some transportation stakeholders on the Driving Theory Test (DTT) to reduce quack and unfit drivers on highways.
Mr. Salaam Adewale, the Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Ademola Adeleke on Transportation, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen during the inauguration of the DTT in Osogbo.
The theme of the inaugural event is “Ensuring Due Process in Driver’s License Processing.”
The Driving Theory Test is a system that ensures prospective applicants for Driver’s Licenses, after training under a certified Driving School, are made to undergo tests.
The test also includes driving in the presence of Vehicle Inspection Officers before being allowed to be captured for a license.
Adewale said the reason for the partnership with other transport stakeholders, especially on DTT, was to have drivers that are fit and qualified to drive on Osun roads.
He explained that the partnership would go a long way in sanitizing the state roads of quack and unfit drivers who endanger the lives of passengers.
“The Driving Theory Test is one of the core mandates our Gov. Adeleke gave to the Ministry of Transportation on assumption of office.
“Gone are the days when you could sit in your house and get a driver’s license, not minding if you can drive a vehicle or not,” Adewale said.
According to him, the present administration of Gov. Ademola Adeleke is working hard towards ensuring zero tolerance for accidents in the state.
Earlier, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Osun Sector Commander, Mr. Inyang Umoh, commended the state government for collaborating with transport stakeholders, while stating that the DTT will sanitize the state roads from unqualified drivers.
Umoh urged drivers to adhere to the DTT initiative, which will help in keeping their lives and passengers safe.
“The DTT is already operating in some states, especially in the South West. It is a good initiative and will help to checkmate drivers on highways.”
In their separate remarks, Mr. Waheed Lawal, Director, Vehicle Inspection Services (V.I.O.), and the state coordinator of Special Marshals in Osun, Mr. Genga Aluko, said all other states in the southwest have keyed into the initiative to reduce the high level of quack drivers and accidents.
The duo explained that such collaboration would be of greater benefit not just for driving schools and heads of driver’s license centers but also for drivers and passengers on highways to help reduce accidents.
