The Osun State Police Command has affirmed its compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, banning the public parade of criminal suspects by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
The IGP’s directive, issued through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, was aimed at upholding fundamental human rights and aligning police practices with global standards.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Osun State Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adeoye Akeem Adeola, reiterated that the order prohibits the public parade of suspects before they are formally charged in court. He emphasised that the directive has been duly communicated to all police commands and formations across the country, including Osun State, where full compliance has been ensured.
“The ban is part of ongoing police reforms designed to uphold human dignity and ensure fairness in law enforcement,” Akeem stated.
He further explained that the move aligns with international human rights standards, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to respecting the rights of all individuals, including those arrested for criminal activities.
“The IGP seeks the cooperation of the public, especially media professionals, in adhering to this policy. Ethical journalism plays a crucial role in maintaining public trust and ensuring an impartial justice system,” he added.
On the rising cases of cult-related activities in the state, the police spokesperson assured that the command is working round the clock to curtail the menace.
“We are acting on credible intelligence to track down those who believe secret cults can provide them with an avenue to disrupt public peace. The command is making significant progress daily,” he said.
He warned that the police would not hesitate to deal decisively with anyone, regardless of status, found engaging in cultism or any act capable of threatening peace in the state.
