Osun State has achieved a major milestone in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking, rising from 30th position in 2024 to 6th place out of 36 states.
The ranking, backed by the Federal Government and the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), evaluates how state governments are responding to climate change through policy development, institutional frameworks, and on-the-ground climate action.
A statement by the spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mallam Olawale Rasheed said the state move to an impressive with a total score of 265 points
According to him, “Osun State is now the second-best performing state in the South-West region, coming after Lagos State. This remarkable improvement is credited to the visionary leadership and strategic investments of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke.
“Under Governor Adeleke’s administration, climate change, renewable energy, circular economy, and environmental sustainability have become central pillars of governance. Key achievements driving this progress include:
Increased funding for climate-related projects and programmes.
Establishment of a Department of Climate Change and Renewable Energy within the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation
Implementation and monitoring of climate projects at the local government level
Integration of climate education and environmental awareness into school curricula
Regular capacity-building and training for climate officers across the state
Strengthened collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and international development partners
Osun also ranked highly in online visibility, reflecting greater transparency and citizen engagement in its environmental initiatives.
At an awards ceremony held at Bon Hotel Octagon, Abuja, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, alongside the Director of Climate Change and Renewable Energy, received the award on behalf of the government.
Rasheed hinted that the recognition was dedicated to the people of Osun and to Governor Adeleke for his unwavering commitment to sustainable development.
Also special mention was given to Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, whose leadership has been pivotal in advancing the state’s climate governance.
Osun State has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing climate action, renewable energy transition, circular economy initiatives, and sustainable development—aiming to build a greener, cleaner, and more resilient future for all residents.
