OSUSTECH to begin Maritime Education

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology, OSUSTECH, Okitipupa will soon begin to run courses in Maritime Education through its partnership with a topflight institution in Maritime studies, it has been disclosed.

Vice-Chancellor, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OSUSTECH), Prof Sunday Ogunduyile made the disclosure, when he led Deputy Vice Chancellor of Caribbean Maritime University, Jamaica, Prof Ibraheem Ajaguna on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, in his office in Akure.

Prof Ogunduyile explained that the development was a follow-up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed with the Caribbean Maritime University, Jamaica recently.

Vice-Chancellor added that the partnership followed the charge of the State Governor to OSUSTECH at the inception of his administration on ways the university could leverage on its proximity to the state’s aquatic potentials, having the longest and deepest coastline in West Africa Sub-region.

He said upon several searches, the partnership would be beneficial to students, the state and Nigeria, if eventually, the Maritime Education takes off.

Describing the Caribbean Maritime University, Jamaica, as a global stakeholder in Maritime Education, its Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibraheem Ajaguna said the university has the best of laboratory in Maritime Studies in the world with accreditations from various international regulatory organisations.

Prof. Ajaguna, who is an indigene of Ondo State, added that with the location of OSUSTECH which according to him was conducive for knowledge and skill acquisitions, there were chances of OSUSTECH surpassing older institutions in Maritime Education.

While assuring of his determination to make OSUSTECH benefit maximally from the deal with his university, Ajaguna described Maritime as a sector with limitless opportunities for employment and tourism.

He however regretted that the curriculum for courses in Nigerian institutions were not in tandem with the need realities of today and the future.

Responding, Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), expressed happiness that OSUSTECH took up the challenge he threw at it on Maritime studies.
