To find a lasting solution to the problem of out-of-school children in Nigeria, government has been urged to intensify its advocacy on the benefits of education.
Speaking with The Hope in an interview, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Ondo State chapter, Comrade Victor Amoko enjoined government to target parents since the bulk of the work is on them.
According to him, most of the parents particularly in the northern part of the country do not know the value of education and are not ready to send their children to school.
Amoko who said government has advocated that there should be education for all called on them to do more since the children are the future of the nation.
While saying some parents give flimsy excuses on why they could not release their children to be registered in schools, Amoko said they are not building the future of such children.
He added that whoever wants to build the nation must be ready to build lives calling on parents in particular to support education for all.
The chairman who said teachers are always ready to register any child that comes, urged children to be ready to learn and should know that their future will be affected if they lack formal education.
“For anybody to be a councillor in Nigeria today, he must have at least primary six let alone being a chairman of a local government, or governor of a state or a house of assembly member.
“Those who were not serious when we were in school then now hinged their lack of formal education on excuses that are not true to cover up for their unseriousness,” he said.
He advised government and philanthropists to go after children who are truly orphans so that they can help them acquire formal education.
Speaking on those who say that their religion does not allow formal education, Amoko said their holy book was being written by those who learned reading and writing from somewhere.
