The people of Owo, will on Wednesday, file out to protest what they call “crazy bills” electricity consumers are being charged in the town.

The protest, according to the organisers, Owo Unity Group and Owo Youth Assembly is to show the displeasure of the people to what they called over estimated billings by the authorities of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, (BEDC) which is responsible for electricity supply in the town. They condemned  the BEDC over its  failure to meter all unmetered houses in the town.

The protest will start at the Okemapo Hall at 7.30am and through major parts of the town.

In a statement by a leader of one of the groups, Idowu Adebayo, each unmetered house is being charged between N14,000.00 and N35,000.00 monthly on power consumption.

The groups therefore described this as a daylight robbery and simply unacceptable to the people.

“This is pure daylight robbery, a design to further fleece the people who are already faced by the current hardship as brought about by the gloomy economic situation in the country. This is simply unacceptable”.

They therefore called on all the people of Owo to come out in large number to take part in the peaceful protest meant to liberate them from the  shylock attitude of BEDC.

Meanwhile, the organisers have warned hoodlums to stay away from the event as adequate security measures have been put in place to arrest those who might want to hijack the process for their selfish motives.
