Amid rising security concerns and a renewed threat of terrorist attacks, the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun , has reassured residents of Owo and its environs of their safety, even as the town prepares to host a crucial security summit.
The Commander of Amotekun, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that the outfit and other security agencies in the state have been placed on red alert following a fresh threat allegedly issued by suspected bandits to launch another attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owo, the same church where a deadly 2022 bombing claimed many lives.
Adeleye stated: “We are on red alert to ensure adequate security across Ondo State. Amotekun Rangers units are stationed in various strategic locations across the nooks and crannies to maintain peace and ensure the safety of all residents.”
He urged residents to go about their normal activities without fear, adding that the agency’s distress line — 08097999989 remains active for immediate response in the event of any emergency.
The renewed threat has triggered anxiety across the town and prompted the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, to convene an emergency security summit involving community leaders and security stakeholders.
In a statement signed by Mr. Olatunbosun Oladimeji, the Publicity Secretary of the Owo Security Summit Committee, the maiden edition of the summit, themed “Securing Owo and its Environs: Strategies for Community Safety and Resilience,” is scheduled to hold on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Prof. Abubakar Rasheed Auditorium, Achievers University, Owo. The event will commence at 9 a.m.
The state Governor, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and his Deputy, Dr Olayide Owolabi Adelami, are among the distinguished guests expected at the summit.
Also, retired Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi is billed to chair the event, while Oba Ogunoye III will lead traditional rulers in attendance. Chairman of Owo Local Government Council, Tope Omolayo serves as Chief Host.
The summit committee is chaired by Pastor Olugbenga Olumolawa, with Professor Taiwo Adenegan anchoring proceedings.
Oladimeji stressed that the summit seeks to deepen awareness of community security, reduce crime and foster trust between security agents and residents. A major objective of the gathering is to establish a Security Trust Fund to support and sustain local security initiatives.
The recent resurgence in banditry and kidnappings has taken a toll on the town’s socio-economic life, heightening the urgency for a community-driven security approach.
Oladimeji reiterated that proactive collaboration is vital, as the people of Owo can no longer afford to be passive in the face of repeated threats.
