Oyebanji commends military’s bravery, celebrates Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s appointment

By Victor Akinkuolie, Ado-Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has lauded the Nigerian Military for their sacrifices and bravery, which have led to the gradual decimation of those perpetrating terror attacks in parts of the country.

Commending the Federal Government for empowering the military to defend the nation, Oyebanji celebrated the appointment of Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff. He described the appointment of an Ekiti native to such a prestigious position as historic and heartwarming to the state’s citizens.

Governor Oyebanji made these remarks during an interdenominational service marking the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.

The event was held at the Government House Chapel in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Sunday.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, Oyebanji commended the military for remaining resolute despite losing many officers and men in the fight against terrorists, including Boko Haram insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, and cattle rustlers.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting soldiers on the battlefield and the families of fallen heroes who either paid the ultimate sacrifice or suffered life-altering injuries while defending the nation.

Highlighting the importance of honouring past and present military personnel, Oyebanji stated, “This service is organised to remember and pray for the brave military officers and soldiers who fought in various battles to defend the unity of our country. Many of these gallant officers paid the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty, while others suffered life-altering injuries.

“It is essential to reach out to the families of those who lost their lives and to those who were wounded.

“I pay tribute to our heroes, the veterans who fought so we may live in peace. It is crucial for the government and all Nigerians to support these veterans, as this will incentivise our military personnel and strengthen our national defence.”

He continued, “While we remember our past heroes, we also commend and pray for our military personnel still actively defending the country against insurgents.

“We applaud their bravery and sacrifices and pray for their continued safety. This year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration holds special significance for us in Ekiti State.”

The governor also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing an Ekiti native, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, to the strategic position of Chief of Army Staff.

“For the first time in the history of our nation, our brother and son, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, was appointed as Chief of Army Staff. We express our gratitude to God for this significant achievement and thank the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for recognising our son’s capabilities and appointing him to this esteemed position,” he said.

Oyebanji called on public and private organisations to intensify support for past heroes and their families, stressing the importance of ongoing assistance beyond the annual celebrations.

“Let us give these families a reason to feel proud that their husbands, fathers, and sons died for our nation.

” We must also provide unwavering support to the military as they diligently work to ensure our safety and security. Development thrives in a safe and secure environment,” he added.

In his address, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Major General Obinna Godwin Onubogu, commended governments at all levels for their unwavering support in the fight against elements threatening Nigeria’s peace.

Major General Onubogu pledged the continued loyalty and commitment of servicemen to the government, assuring that efforts to restore peace across the nation would not waver.

“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure Nigerians can sleep with their two eyes closed,” he affirmed.

Delivering the sermon, the Government House Chaplain, Pastor Segun Awolumate, emphasised the military’s divine mandate to protect Nigeria. Speaking on the topic “Commanded to Destroy,” Awolumate urged servicemen to remain loyal and diligent, rising against all forms of insurrection that have brought deaths, panic, and unrest among citizens.
