As schools resumed today across Ondo State for the 2021/2022 academic session, parents have continued to lament exorbitant prices of books and other educational materials.
Also, sellers of educational materials like books, school uniforms, sandals among others have complained of low patronage which they attributed to high cost of the materials.
Some parents and sellers who spoke with The Hope called on government to find a lasting solution to the economic hardship and the increase in prices of goods.
A parent, Mrs Omolara Ayodele said she could not buy all the books recommended by the school because prices have gone up astronomically.
According to her, higher education notebook which sold for #150 per one last year now sells for #300 while textbooks and uniforms have almost doubled their prices.
She advised parents to do their best to give their children good education and called on government to find a lasting solution to the high cost of commodities in the country.
Another parent, Mr Joshua Adenegan lamented that things are becoming unbearable with the economic downturn in the country. He said the prices of educational materials have become unaffordable.
“It is more difficult now with the economic downturn in the country. Educational materials particularly have become unaffordable. I have not bought anything for my children because I don’t even have money,” he said.
A school uniform seller, Mrs Tola Akinnuli said patronage is low which she attributed to high cost of materials.
“I think exchange rate is the reason for the high cost of educational materials. And because there is no money in town, parents who should buy new ones asked their children to use old ones,” she said.
