Parliamentary system will reduce cost of governance – Aboluwoye

If Nigeria can adopt the parliamentary system of government to replace the current system, the cost of governance, money spent to conduct  of elections will be reduced and vote buying will be eradicated.

This was the submission of a political analyst and academician, Professor Olu Aboluwoye while reacting to the motion moved by some lawmakers in the House of Representatives to return Nigeria back to a parliamentary system of government.

Speaking in a telephone interview with The Hope, Aboluwoye said Nigeria is not matured for the Presidential system of government due to the high cost of running it, noting that under the parliamentary government, enough fund will be available for capital projects and also accommodate part-time job for the lawmakers.

His words: “Parliamentary is the best, knowingly full well that we don’t have sufficient fund for presidential system of government. Parliamentary system  will reduce cost of governance because  you only elect the House of Assembly members  and the House of Assembly will now elect the governor,  and see and buy will be managed.

Aboluwoye also condemned the pressure put on President Muhammadu Buhari by the Senate to assent to the electoral amendment bill, describing it as a 419 approach.

According to him, any new law must be opened for a public debate before imposing it on the masses, adding that there is a need to tutor the public about the bill before signing it into a law.

He noted that the bill is belated considering the fact that 2019 general elections is very close and when the Independent National Electoral Commission has already procured materials for the elections.

“As far as I’m concerned, you cannot sign electoral law now, the people must be tutored, you don’t just sign an electoral law and then you want to implement it, you must give at least two or three years for people to acclimatized to that reform.

“Any law you want to introduce to the nation, people must be well-tutored about the law, let them change law when there is no election, so that, people can debate it, not while approaching election, they should give that law leverage for people to understand the law, nobody understand what is inside the electoral law”,  he said
