The postponement of Presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued to generate discord among political parties.
The elections which was earlier scheduled to hold on February 16 was shifted to February 23, while Governorship and House of Assembly elections slated for March 2 will now be conducted on March 9.
INEC gave acute shortage of electoral materials as reason for the postponement of the elections.
In separate interviews with The Hope, chairmen of political parties in Ondo State expressed dissatisfactions over the postponement.
The State chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Chief Korede Duyile, described the postponement as an unfortunate development and a national embarrassment.
He expressed disappointment in the INEC, which he said failed to improve confidence, Nigerians and the world have in the commission.
Duyile noted that the excuse given by the commission, which led to the postponement was supposed to have been looked into to avoid the postponement, stressing that the excuse was condemnable and unexpected.
According to him, ” the campaign by political parties before the original dates for the elections before their postponement cost politicians a lot of money .
“Why did INEC announce the postponement late and whatever the reasons given by the commission we are on the lookout to see what will happen”
On his part, the State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Mr. Bisi Ogungbemi described the postponement as a development that was not new in Nigeria electoral system, noting that the former INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega postponed the 2015 general elections due to security reason.
