PDP sweeps Osun LG polls, clinches all seats

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged victorious in all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 30 local government areas of Osun State in the just-concluded local government election.
Announcing the results on Saturday in Osogbo, Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), Hashim Abioye, declared that the exercise was conducted peacefully in line with constitutional provisions and existing electoral laws.
According to him, the election was organised to fill vacancies in 332 wards and 30 LGAs across the state, with candidates from 18 political parties participating.
“From the results obtained from the field, PDP candidates in all 332 wards emerged victorious. As the Chief Returning Officer of the commission, I hereby declare them duly elected councillors of their respective wards,” Abioye stated.
He further confirmed that the ruling party also clinched all chairmanship positions across the local government areas.
“For the 30 LGAs in Osun State, PDP candidates won all the seats. By the powers conferred on me as the Chief Returning Officer of OSSIEC, I declare them duly elected chairmen of their respective local government areas,” he added.
The OSSIEC boss, however, expressed regret over the inability to provide accreditation materials for journalists covering the exercise.
He attributed this to the sealing of the commission’s headquarters by the police, which, according to him, prevented access to the necessary documents.
“We sincerely apologise to the media community for the lack of accreditation materials. This was due to the police sealing off our head office, where the materials were kept. Up till now, they have refused to grant us access,” he lamented.
The election, despite the challenge, was described as peaceful and in line with legal provisions.
