Petrol tanker driver escapes death as truck tumbles

A 40-year-old tanker driver, on Wednesday escaped death by a whiskers at Adebowale junction along Ondo road in Akure, Ondo State capital, when the truck loaded with petroleum product tumbled.
The Hope Metro gathered that the driver of the tanker was on top speed from Ondo axis and was trying to control the speed when the truck tumbled around 10:15am.
The tanker, swerved off the road and rammed into a life electric pole along the road leading to the Army Officer’s Mess gate.
The victim, who sustained severe head injury was rescued by men of the Army to the Army hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, men of the Nigerian Police, the Army and the Federal Fire Service were on ground to avert any likely fire outbreak.
Men of the Federal Fire Service were seen spraying foamy water on the tanker to reduce the heat that could result to explosion.
Speaking with the team leader from the Federal Fire Service in Ondo, DS Samuel Okungbade, he confirmed that “We got a distress call on our emergency line that there was an accident involving a petrol trailer.
“We are here to attend to the situation to avert any likely explosion.
“The situation have been suppressed and controlled and we are waiting for the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG to evacuate the petrol from the tanker.
“The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle who was seriously injured and has been rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
