Police arraign 2 over hemp possession

Two men, Rasheed Ayodele and Alaba Seye have been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court over alleged possession of cannabis sativa otherwise called Indian hemp.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Bamigbade, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on March 21, 2023 at about 4p.m at Atikankan area in Ado-Ekiti.
Ayodele, 25, and Seye, 23, are facing a charge of possession of illegal Indian hemp.
Bamigbade alleged that the defendants had in their possession weeds suspected to be indian hemp and illicit drugs.
He said that the offence contravenes Section 5 (b) of the Indian Hemp Act 1966.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty as their counsel, Mr Oluwafemi Adenigba, urged the court to grant his clients bail, promising that they would not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case till April 13, for hearing.
