Police arraign 4 over possession of human parts

Four men were on Thursday, arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrate Court, for allegedly possessing human parts.

Men of the Ondo State Police Command charged the suspects; Idris Oluwafemi, 42,; Babatunde Kayode, 67; Samuel Kutelu,42, and Nasiru Rasaq, 32, with four counts bordering on criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession and receiving human parts.

The prosecutor, Inspector Folashade Adeyemi, informed the court that the defendants were nabbed with different human parts in their possession.

According to her, the human parts included, three hearts, two fresh hands, three kidneys, spinal cords, ribs, and tongues, which they could not give a satisfactory account of how they came about them.

She said they committed the offences on December 2023 and February 2024, at Agboriki Street, Ikare-Akoko.

The prosecutor alleged the first defendant supplied the human parts to the second defendant and the third defendant.

The offences contravene Sections 329 (A) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol 1. Laws of the Ondo State Nigeria, 2006.

When the charge was read, the defendants pleaded not-guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor prayed for an adjournment to enable her study the case file.

She revealed that the body parts had been recovered by the police.

The defence lawyers, Messrs C.O. Falana, A.O. Akinde, and O.B. Salami, prayed for the bail of their clients in the most liberal terms.

They submitted that the defendants would not jump bail, but provide reliable surety.

Adeyemi, however, objected to the defendants bail. She stated that granting them would put the lives of more innocent citizens in danger.

The Magistrate, Adekunle Ogunmoyela, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N1million each with two sureties  each in like sum.

 Ogunmoyela adjourned the case till April 18, 2024, for hearing.
