Police arraign contractors over N100m  fraud

The Ondo State Police command on Tuesday arraigned two building contractors before an Akure Magistrates’ Court over an alleged N100m fraud.

The duo: Muhammad Owolaja, 55;and Joe Imuambor,  52 whose addresses were not given were charged with a three-count charge of fraud, criminal conversion, and obtaining by false pretence to which they pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, I.O. Osobu, told the court that the defendants and others at large committed the offence on August 8, 2023 in Akure.

Osobu said the defendants conspired to falsely obtain the sum of N100 million from one Amos Akeem to facilitate a construction project.

He alleged that the defendant, instead stole the money and converted it into their personal use.

The offence, according to the charge contravened  Section 516, 390 of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The defence counsel, O. Abdulkadri prayed the court to grant his clients bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, T.I. Ayodele-James granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Ayodele-James said that one of the the sureties must be a civil servant on grade level 15 under the state government.

The case was adjourned till  August 13, 2024, for trial.
