Police arrest 18 suspected cultists, others in Ekiti

The police in Ekiti State have arrested 18 members of Aiye Secret Confraternity who specialise in robbing private hospitals, banks and other financial institutions in the State.

The suspects were also nabbed for their alleged involvement in the killing at Oye-Ekiti in March of one Ajayi Sunday and Owolabi Moses.

Members of the suspected cult group believed to be Supreme Eiye confratality were arrested by men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) attached to the command during a routine and special operation recently carried out by the command.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Sunday Abutu, the suspects, who are members of a nine-man gang were arrested shortly after robbing a private hospital located at Nova road Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

Abutu said the suspects had on the fateful day robbed one Ojo Emmanuel, Balogun Ahmed and one other staff of the hospital including a patient of the hospital and disposed them of their belongings, such as mobile phone, laptop, wedding rings and cash.

Abutu added that the suspected robbers, on their way out of the hospital, also hijacked a Toyota Corolla car from one Mr Ojo Dada and went away with it.

He gave the names of the suspects as Lasisi Afeez, Omotoyinbo Samuel, Ajewole Peter and Ilesanmi Seun, who were arrested for allegedly supplying locally made cut to size single barrel gun and three cartridges to the gang for the operation.

According to the police, during interrogations, the suspects said the nine-member gang, had started their robbery operations since 2015.

He said they confessed to be members of the Supreme Eiye confraternity, who have robbed several private hospitals within Ado-Ekiti, an old generation bank in Iyin-Ekiti and claimed to have sometime in the year 2021 kidnapped a Chinese expatriate at a construction site in Ado-Ekiti.

They equally mentioned one Fadairo Oyindamola, Akinleye Seyi, Samuel Omoiku Yeye Orio and Tunji Tunde, who were earlier arrested and are currently in correctional custody as members of the gang who had committed series of armed robbery operations.

The gang also mentioned one Afe Ayodeji, Adejumo Kehinde, Ardinoi Samuel as members of the syndicate, based in Abuja and Ondo State.

The command also paraded three suspected kidnappers and cattle rustlers – Dairu Adamu, Usman Saidu and Nura Usman, who, alongside others at large, allegedly attacked one Sani Mamuda, a Fulani herdsman who was rearing his cattle along the Eruku/Itapaji forest and in the process rustled 35 cattle from him while he managed to escape from the scene.

Similarly, two suspected cattle rustlers, Yahu Bello and Muhamed Alima, were arrested in Ikole-Ekiti and one Ajayi Emmanuel for receiving the rustled cattle.

The suspects said their wives were fully aware of their criminal activities, while most of the money they had been making were used for the upkeep of their various homes.

Abutu said efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang as soon as investigations is completed.
