Police arrest 7, recover  weapons as NURTW, RTEAN clash in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command at the weekend confirmed the arrest of seven persons in connection with the bloody clash that broke out between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and their counterparts of the Road Transport Employers (RTEAN) in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Caleb Ikechulwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said the police also recovered dangerous weapons including, two barrel guns, three expended cartridges, four cutlasses, one jack knife and one Suzuki Mini Bus with the registration  number Ekiti KER 509 XA.from the suspects.

It will be recalled that members of the two drivers unions on Thursday launched an attack on themselves, during which dangerous weapons were used, the clash  almost paralyze business and commercial activities in the major street of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital as people scampered for safety.

The police said those arrested were: Olokunlade Olamide 22; Ogunleye Oluwaseun, 32; Alabi Adebo  32; Ajidaro Akin 39; Karimu Mutiu, 20; Yakubu Mohammed 32; and Ogundipe Sunday 30 who were members of the two unions.

Though, the cause of the mayhem is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, it was however gathered that the two drivers unions were said to be in battle for supremacy on which Union would take over the new motor park built by the last administration in the state.

The police, while promising effective and swift investigations on the matter, said, ” We have begun thorough investigation on the matter, as soon as the investigation is concluded, all the suspects will be charged to court for proper prosecution.

“The Command appreciated members of the public who gave timely and accurate information on the incidence, saying it helped to secure lives and properties and ultimately restored peace to the affected areas.

The police also urged citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious or untoward happenings to the nearest police station.
