Police nab ‘mad man’, found with bales of Naira notes
Detectives of the Ondo State Police Command are still trying to ascertain if truly a middle-aged man, recently found with bales of various naira notes, is actually insane or not.
The Hope Metro gathered that the man, dressed in rags, had been going about extorting money from innocent members of the public at the Benin garage area, along Akure-Owo road, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The man, who identified himself as Olajide Adesanoye, was nabbed by police detectives on surveillance and patrol on Monday following a tip off.
The suspect, it was learnt, was arrested with a bag containing various naira denominations which were carefully arranged.
According to the police, various naira notes in different denominations ranging from five to one thousand naira denominations were found in the bag.
The ‘mad man’ was paraded by the police on Tuesday at the command’s headquarters along Igbatoro road in Akure.
The recover money were not counted as the exact amount was not ascertained.
The Police spokesperson, Mr. Femi Joseph, while briefing journalists on the arrest of the suspect, who slept all through the briefing, told reporters that the man could be using his dressing to deceive people and pretend to be a beggar in order to dupe unsuspecting victims at the Benin garage area.
He explained that the manner in which the suspect carefully arranged the money separately according to their denominations and kept the money safe, makes it suspicious.
He said that the police will detect the suspect’s mental state of health through investigation.
“He is pretending and we will conduct necessary test on him, because he told us during interrogation that he was planning to travel to Abuja to meet his family. His appearance could be deceitful. But investigation will reveal his true state,” Joseph stated.
A trader who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the man had been at the garage begging for money for over three years, saying, “he could have gathered such huge amount of money, while pretending to be an insane.”
However, most of the people around the garage, in separate chats with The Hope Metro called on the police to concentrate more on tackling the rising cases of kidnapping, which is currently taking a worrisome dimension in the state.
