The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended three suspects in connection with the attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at Ogbese while they were en route to Abuja for their annual convention.
A statement from the command revealed that the incident occurred on Sunday, February 23, 2024, following a distress call from one of the students, who reported an unprovoked assault by some youths in the area.
Police operatives swiftly responded, restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of the victims. A manhunt was immediately launched, leading to the arrest of three suspects linked to the attack.
Sources disclosed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the community. Acting on credible intelligence, the command’s special squad tracked down and apprehended the suspects.
Reacting to the development, the Southwest Zonal Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, commended the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, for his swift intervention and proactive approach to security. He also pledged the association’s support in collaborating with law enforcement agencies to tackle crime in the state.
CP Afolabi assured that a thorough investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack, stressing that all perpetrators would be brought to justice. He reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding residents and travelers across Ondo State.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The police urged residents to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action.
