The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed that it has detained an officer for allegedly stabbing a man over an argument in Ise-Ekiti, Ise-Orun Local Government Area of the state.
A woman recently took to social media to call for justice after a police officer reportedly attacked her father with a knife at their home in the Ise-Ekiti area.
In a viral video, the woman claimed that the officer—allegedly a personal orderly to a chairman—attacked her father in their home following a disagreement between her younger brother and a female classmate.
According to her, the girl reported the argument to her boyfriend, which led to two police officers confronting the family and claiming they were there to make an arrest.
In the video, showing her father in the hospital, the woman said, “I’m currently in Ise. This is my dad, lying helplessly in the hospital. My younger brother had an argument with a classmate. This led to another argument. The girl angrily called her boyfriend to come and fight my brother at home. When they arrived, they did not find my brother, but only his elder brother.
“They started questioning the elder brother and told him to follow them to the police station, claiming they wanted to arrest him. Only one of them entered the house first.
“He started challenging them, asking, ‘What did I do? Why are you taking me to the station? What is my offence?’ Then the officer began to rush him, hitting him and punching him.
“My brother called my dad to come out because he wasn’t in the room at the time. He asked my dad to come and stop the men who were hitting him. My dad came out to intervene and asked, ‘What’s going on? Why are you hitting my son?’
“Then, out of nowhere, one of the officers pulled out a knife and stabbed my father in his stomach. Fortunately, my dad was able to use his hand to block the knife, but the blade tore through his hand.
“As we speak, the person who stabbed my dad is a police officer stationed here in Ise-Orun district. This is my dad. This is his stomach.”
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abutu Sunday, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, explained that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has directed the Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a thorough investigation.
The PPRO, who did not disclose the identity of the officer, stated, “The officer in question has been taken into custody for investigation and further necessary actions.”
He added, “The Command is urging everyone, especially the victim’s family members, to remain calm, as justice will be served in this case as soon as possible.”
