Community leaders in Ondo State will henceforth be arrested by the police for the criminal activities of their subjects, the police have warned.
A decision to this effect was conveyed in Akure yesterday at a security parley held with Hausa community leaders and Fulani herdsmen.
Worried by upsurge of kidnapping and armed banditry in the state, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Undie Adie, sounded tough that henceforth, ” we will first arrest the leader before going to arrest the suspect”
Adie told stakeholders including members of the Miyeti Allah that as from now, every community leader must keep an eye on their subjects, because it is presumed that the leader of that community is benefitting from the criminality.
The meeting convened by the Police boss, Mr Undie Adie and held at the police officer’s mess along Adekunle Ajasin road in Akure, had the leaders of Hausa and Fulani herdsman in attendance including divisional police officers and, heads of departments of the State Police Command.
Speaking, Adie said the motive of the meeting was for effective partnership between the police and leaders of Hausa /Fulani so as to curb crime and criminality happening in the state.
The Police boss who said it has become necessary for the police to partner with relevant stakeholders, especially Hausa and Fulani herdsman leaders, warned that henceforth, any leader that failed to cooperate with the police would be held responsible in any case of kidnapping reported to have occurred in his jurisdiction.
His words, ” I called for this meeting for us to partner in order to solve crime related issues happening in the state, especially kidnappings and armed robbery. You, the leaders of various groups should try to identify strange faces in your domain and report them to the police.
“I enjoined you to go home and fish out criminal elements in your area and inform the police so that we can flush them out to have a peaceful and crime free society, “he stated.
” You must watch out for strangers in your area and try to identify your members and also those who are criminal. Also ensure you hand them over to the police, because after the meeting, any suspected kidnapper arrested in your area and such suspect later found out to have come from your area, the leader of that community will also be arrested.
“Anywhere there is a kidnapping case, we will first arrest the leader before going to arrest the suspect, because it will presume that the leader of that community is benefiting from that criminality.
” After arresting the leader of that community, we will carry him alongside with vigilantee group into the forest in search for the victim.
Special Assistant to the Governor on Hausa/Fulani Matters, Hon. Bala Umaru, commended the commissioner of police for the meeting saying that it will further help to sensitise the group on the need for peace.
He added that the state government has been having such meeting at local government levels stressing that all hands must be on deck to tackle menace and other violent crime.
The leader of Miyeti Allah Alhaji Belllo Garuba said criminality should not be limited to a particular tribe, saying that a criminal is always a criminal irrespective of where he comes from.
