Police revive digital tinted glass permit to curb harassment, crime

In a bid to end the persistent harassment of motorists and bolster national security, the Nigeria Police Force has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) through a secure digital platform.
This move, directed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, comes after growing public outcry over police maltreatment of drivers using factory-fitted tinted windows.
The new platform, now operational via www.possap.gov.ng, promises a simplified, transparent, and accountable process for Nigerians seeking legitimate authorisation to use tinted glass.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed the development in a statement made available to Weekend Hope, said the measure has become necessary given that most modern vehicles are now manufactured with tinted windows.
He said while such features are standard in newer car models, they have also become a tool for criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, “one-chance” scams and other security threats.
The use of tinted windows, according to the statement, undermines police visibility and hinders effective law enforcement.
Reactivating the permit system, Adejobi noted, is a strategic intervention aimed at differentiating lawful users, such as individuals with medical needs and authorised security operatives from those who exploit the feature for nefarious purposes.
“The initiative is expected to boost police investigative efforts and reinforce national security mechanisms,” the statement read.
Applicants can now process their permits online. The system integrates identity verification via the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), including biometric capture and background checks. Each permit is QR-coded, with processing set to conclude within 72 hours.
To allow for a smooth transition, the Police have approved a 30-day grace period, effective from May 1, 2025, during which all affected motorists are expected to comply with the updated requirements.
“Enforcement will commence at the expiration of the grace period,” the statement warned, adding that any officer found guilty of unprofessional conduct, including extortion or harassment during enforcement will face strict disciplinary measures in line with existing regulations.
Inspector-General Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to a technologically driven and citizen-focused policing system.
He urged Nigerians to embrace the initiative for safer roads, stronger public confidence, and a more secure nation.
