The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has intensified efforts to combat the growing menace of online crimes with a one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign held in Abuja, aimed at promoting digital literacy, responsible online behaviour, and public resilience against cyber threats.

The NPF–NCCC was established as a specialised unit under the Nigeria Police Force to combat the growing wave of cyber-enabled crimes in the country, including online fraud, identity theft, financial scams and cyberbullying.

The centre works closely with key institutions such as the Nigerian Communications Commission, the National Information Technology Development Agency, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to enhance Nigeria’s capacity in cybercrime prevention, investigation and digital forensics.

A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Sunday, partly read, “The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCCC) has successfully concluded its one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign held in Abuja, marking a significant stride in educating Nigerians on online safety, promoting secure digital practices, and strengthening the nation’s collective defense against cyber threats.

It added that speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Sadiq Abubakar, reiterated the Force’s commitment to ensuring a safe digital environment for Nigerians.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, who was ably represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Sadiq Abubakar, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring a safer digital space for all Nigerians”, the statement quoted the IG as saying.

In his welcome address, the Director of the NPF–NCCC, CP Uche Henry, commended partners and stakeholders for their consistent collaboration and support in advancing national cybersecurity goals.

He underscored the need for joint efforts to tackle the menace of cybercrime, noting that individual awareness and vigilance were crucial in the fight against digital threats.

“CP Uche Ifeanyi Henry appreciated all partners and stakeholders for their continued cooperation and support.

He emphasised that the fight against cybercrime requires a collective national effort, noting that ‘today’s digital era demands that all Nigerians are not just users but also guardians of their own cybersecurity”,, the statement quoted Henry as saying.

The NPF–NCCC boss further highlighted the importance of sustained public education and technological investment to build a safer digital space.

“This campaign is part of our mandate to make citizens more aware and resilient to online threats. We will continue to build on this foundation by scaling up cyber education, enhancing reporting mechanisms, and strengthening our enforcement capacity”, Henry added.

The campaign, which attracted over 3,000 participants from schools, government institutions, private organisations, digital platforms, and security agencies, featured a range of activities designed to engage and educate attendees.

The FPRO also noted that the event reflected the Force’s renewed drive to promote a culture of cyber vigilance and citizen empowerment in the digital space.

“The event recorded over 3,000 participants drawn from schools, government and private institutions, digital platforms, and various agencies. The day featured an awareness walk, distribution of sensitisation materials, as well as a musical fiesta that energised the participants and underscored the campaign’s message in a fun and engaging manner.

“The campaign once again demonstrated the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to securing Nigeria’s digital landscape and empowering citizens on how to Stay Smart, Stay Safe online”, the statement concluded.

It was gathered that Nigeria, like many countries with rapidly expanding digital economies, has faced increasing cyber threats in recent years.

According to the NCC, the country loses billions of naira annually to various forms of cybercrime, including phishing attacks, ransomware, and financial fraud schemes targeting individuals and organisations.

In response, the NPF–NCCC has rolled out several initiatives aimed at strengthening digital resilience nationwide, including public sensitisation campaigns, inter-agency collaboration, and the training of cyber investigators across state commands.
