Like a bitter pill, a 43-year-old police officer, Mr Folorunso Adelana, has approached the Customary Court sitting in Oke-Eda, Akure, seeking for the dissolution of his 25 years old marriage with his wife, Mrs Folake Adelana, in whom he accused of promiscuity.
The petitioner who is a police officer, told the court he was no longer interested in the union which had produced four children.
Adelana, in his oral evidence before the court accused his estranged wife of dating the pastor of her church.
” My lord, I came back one day and found out that my wife has started attending another church where the so-called pastor was transferred to another church.
“My wife has been going out with the pastor since when our first born was still a small boy.
He said when he noticed that she had started attending the church of the same pastor, he warned her to stop going there.
Adelana said, “I traced my wife down to the church and I didn’t meet her there. I called my wife and we started fighting.
“To my amazement, when the pastor got there and saw us fighting, he said, “is this the first time a pastor is would be alleged of dating his church member?”
He further told the court that he once caught his wife in the pastor’s car and dragged her out, while he warned the pastor to stop going out with his wife.
“I was forced to bring her to court, thinking she would be afraid and comply with my instructions. But instead, she became worse.
However, the respondent, Mrs Folake Adelana, a mother of four children ages 25, 13, 9, 7 respectively, debunked her husband’s claims.
Folake, an hair dresser told the court that truly, she used to attend same church with her husband’s second wife, but she left for another church in 2015.
Her words,”I have been going to the new church before my husband was transferred to Ondo and he didn’t complain.
“My husband came to my church to know if I would be there or not. But unfortunately when he got there, I was already on my way home. So, he asked me to come and meet him in the church. But when I got there, he slapped me and I fought back.
“On Jan 1, this year, I called to wish him Happy New Year, but he didn’t pick my calls. He later called around 6pm in the evening and we fought that evening. Thereafter, he went to my house to pack some of my clothes. But till now, I don’t know where he took them to.
“I called my father-in-law and he said he was the one that told his son to divorce me.
“I had to ask him why he now wants his son to terminate the 25 years old union, after I sponsored his son (my husband) through his educational career and today, he has become a police officer.
She said she called her husband to beg his father, but he insisted that she should go and beg him, emphasizing that she could not beg the man.
The respondent therefore urged the court to order her husband to pay their children school fees and also cater for their food and shelter.
Meanwhile, the court presided over by Chief R.A. Olusanya, adjourned the matter till March 4, 2019.
