Policeman docked over N7m

A 28-year-old policeman, Rotimi Akinkuotu, has been dragged before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ondo town, for fraudulently obtaining the sum of N7 million from one Olabisi Temidayo, under the pretence of supplying  him tons of cocoa beans.

Akinkuotu, whose address was not provided, reportedly conspired with others to  collect the sum with a promise to supply the buyer,  Temidsyo, but reneged on his promise.

The police alleged that Akinkuotu, with others earlier arraigned in charge number MOD/148c/2019 had obtained under false pretence and stolen. .But he, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

He was said to have committed the offence sometimes in the month of January 2019, contrary to and punishable under sections 516,419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Rotimi Akinkuotu, and others in charge number MOD/ 148c/2019 sometimes in the month of January 2019, in Ondo town in the Ondo Magisterial District did conspire together to commit felony to wit obtaining money under false pretence and stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you, Rotimi Akinkuotu and others in charge number MOD/148c/2019, in the same date, and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did fraudulently obtained the sum of N7,000,000 from one Olabisi Temidayo,  under the pretence that you will supply tons of cocoa beans to him which you know to be false

and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria,  2006.

“That you, Rotimi Akinkuotu and others in charge number MOD/148c/2019 in the same date, and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did steal the sum of N7,000,000,  property of one Olabisi Temidayo and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The police prosecutor, Mr. Saheed Anifowose, notified the court that he would be calling three prosecution witnesses to testify in the case. He, therefore, applied for a date to enable him study the case file.

The defendant’s counsel, Mr. Oladiran Olajide, also applied for the bail of his client in most liberal terms.

Magistrate Mrs Bolatito Ajibade, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who she added must produce evidence of payment of tax.

Ajibade adjourned the case till December 9, 2019 for mention.
