Poor welfare led to student’s death -Osun Poly SUG

From Fisayo Akinduro, Osogbo
The Students Union Government of Osun State Polytechnic, Ire has decried the rate of lack of infrastructure and welfare in the institution that resulted to the death of a student.

It will be recalled that an HND student of the institution, Aminu Sheu slumped after examination on May 31, 2019 and died.

The union under the leadership of Comrade Bolaji Olaniyi disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference at the Osun State NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo.

Olaniyi said it is quite unfortunate that the news being circulated about the incident which resulted into the vandalization of the school’s Health Centre is far from the truth.

He confirmed that the health Centre was vandalized and looted, but not set ablazed as reported by the school Public Relations Officer, Mr Tope Abiola.

While explaining the ugly incident, the SUG president said the student died due to the lackadaisical attitude of the school management to heed to the yearnings of students to have a health center off campus.

In the same vein, the leadership of the union said there is no justification for the suspension of the union as regards the happenings in the institution.

The management of the institution on June 13 suspended the activities of the students union.

Olaniyi said the union proposed a procession for the deceased in the school community, but some miscreants hijacked the event when he was addressing students at the institution’s gate.

The union said any attempt by the management to take advantage of the happenings in the institution to unjustly suspend the union shall be resisted by the entire union.

They urged the investigation panel to be objective, fair and just in their recommendations and expose students culpable in the crisis.
