Popular gospel singer, Big Bolaji is dead

The Nigerian gospel music industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of a popular gospel singer, Bolaji Olanrewaju, widely known as Big Bolaji.
Although details surrounding his demise remain sketchy as of press time, the news of his passing was first made public by a cleric, Prophet Joshua Olayiwola, who took to his verified Facebook page to announce the heartbreaking news.
Prophet Olayiwola’s post, though brief, sparked a wave of reactions among fans and colleagues of the late gospel artiste, who is celebrated for his energetic praise sessions and soul-lifting gospel ministration.
Also reacting to the news, another prominent gospel figure and comedian, Woli Agba, expressed his shock on one of his official Facebook pages, where he posed a rhetorical question in response to the rumoured death, further igniting concerns over the authenticity of the report.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the family of the deceased, and efforts to reach his management team proved abortive.
Big Bolaji, who had carved a niche for himself in the gospel music scene with several concerts and praise nights to his name, was a regular face at major Christian gatherings across the country. He was particularly known for his dynamic stage presence and unique style of worship that endeared him to many.
His last major public appearance was in November 2024, when he performed alongside other gospel acts such as Senwele Jesu at the Night of Praise event held in Ondo State.
The death of Big Bolaji comes months after the Nigerian gospel music industry lost other notable singers, including Aduke Gold in August 2024 and Morenikeji, popularly known as ‘Egbin Orun’, in April 2024.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, fellow artistes, and members of the Christian community, many of whom described the singer as a vessel of honour and a cheerful soul whose legacy will live on through his music.
As the public awaits confirmation from his family, the mood remains somber across various social media platforms, with many expressing disbelief and heartbreak over the news.
Big Bolaji’s death, if confirmed, would mark yet another painful blow to Nigeria’s gospel music scene, which continues to lose some of its finest voices.
