A man, Taiwo Ogunsanya, has dragged his pregnant wife, Seun Ogunsanya, before a Customary Court in Akure, Ondo State, after he allegedly discovered his younger sister tied up and bruised in a locked room of their home, upon his return from a business trip.
The shocking discovery, which has since led to the arrest of the expectant mother, unfolded after Ogunsanya became suspicious when he could not ràeach his sister, a student of the University of Benin, who had travelled to spend her mid-semester break at his residence.
Narrating the situation in court, Ogunsanya recounted how his wife had objected to hosting any of his relatives, including his younger sister, despite her pregnancy, making household chores more difficult.
“I explained that my sister was only coming for a few weeks to assist with chores, but Seun bluntly refused. I had to persuade her,” he said.
He narrated that shortly after his sister’s arrival, he travelled to Abuja for a two-week contract job. However, he became alarmed when calls to his sister went unanswered and his wife insisted she had returned to their parents’ house.
“My instincts told me something was wrong. Upon returning home, I found her belongings untouched. After searching the house, I was shocked to find her in a locked room, tied up and visibly injured,” he told the court.
He said he immediately rushed the girl to a hospital for treatment before reporting the matter to the police, leading to his wife’s arrest.
Presiding over the matter, Ireti Sunday acknowledged the gravity of the allegations, but said the court would tread cautiously due to the defendant’s pregnancy.
She noted that sentencing, if warranted, would be deferred until after the delivery.
“The court recognises the sensitive nature of this case and the defendant’s condition. We shall proceed with care and fairness,” the judge said.
The matter was adjourned to a yet-to-be-disclosed date for further hearing.
