The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated journalists in the state on this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement co-signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, and the Secretary, Comrade O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Union stated that the theme of this year’s Press Freedom Day — “Freedom of Expression in the Face of the AI Revolution” — is apt and timely, as serious questions have been raised about the use of artificial intelligence in virtually all spheres of human endeavour.

The Union in the state called on its members to adapt to technological advancements that enhance professionalism.

It acknowledged that artificial intelligence has transformed the face of journalism but cautioned that it has also given rise to misinformation and bias.

While felicitating with Ekiti journalists on Press Freedom Day, the NUJ urged its members to take advantage of the positive potential of artificial intelligence, without losing sight of the ethics of journalism, which serve as guiding principles for the profession.

“We felicitate with our members in Ekiti State and colleagues across the world on this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

This year’s theme is timely, as the use of artificial intelligence in the media has come under scrutiny.

We therefore urge our members to make positive use of AI’s potential, bearing in mind that the ethics of journalism must never be compromised. Once we lose the ethics, we lose the profession,” the Union stated.
