Mass Communication students have been charged to be digital savvy and ICT compliant in order to meet up with the demands of the present day journalism practices.

Giving the advice during the 15th Press Week Anniversary of National Association of Mass Communication Students, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, the Chief Operating Officer of Crest FM Akure, Adeolu Gboyega, said the new media has revolutionized the media world, including the traditional media.

He said that mass communication students must ensure they are well equiped with the necessary skills that the ICT has brought into journalism practice.

He equally charged the student to acquire fact checking skills, beware of several news sites with unscrupulous reports that might mislead them.

He said a degree in Mass Communication may not be enough  to secure jobs without skills and work experience.

Highlighting the challenges brought by the internet into journalism, he mentioned the incursion of quacks, who parade themselves as bloggers into the profession

He concluded that despite the challenges, digital journalism is what the students cannot do without in the current dispensation.

In his message, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Chapter, Prince Leke Adegbite appreciated the students for instituting a programme to immortalise the departed NUJ member and alumnus of the department, Sola Ilesanmi, stating that the NUJ would continue to support the initiative.

Prince Adegbite said that NUJ would soon come up with an initiative to support campus journalism to encourage the students.

Awards of excellence were presented to Owena Press journalist, Saheed Ibrahim, Adeolu Gboyega among others.
