Prof. Akanbi to tackle malaria menace at AAUA’s 33rd inaugural lecture

A distinguished Parasitologist at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof Olusegun Matthew Akanbi, will deliver the 33rd Inaugural Lecture of the institution.

The lecture, titled “Small but Mighty to Pull Down the Mightier: The Menace of Malaria Parasite”, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the University Multipurpose Hall. Guests are advised to be seated by 1:30 PM.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, will preside over the event, as confirmed by Professor Adebisi Daramola, the Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin.).

Prof. Akanbi’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (Parasitology) from the University of Calabar in 1994. He later earned a Master’s degree in Cellular Parasitology from the University of Ibadan in 1997 and a PhD in Parasitology from the same institution in 2007.

In addition to his formal degrees, Prof. Akanbi has participated in specialised courses such as Ethical Issues in International Health Research at Harvard School of Public Health (2007) and Advanced Vaccination Strategies at the Scuola Superiore D’Immunologia in Italy (2013).

Since joining Adekunle Ajasin University as an Assistant Lecturer in January 2004, Prof. Akanbi has risen steadily through the ranks, attaining the status of Professor in 2018.

He has held over 20 leadership roles, including Acting Head of Department, Acting Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, and Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Science. He is currently serving as the Dean of Student Affairs and the University Chaplain.

A respected speaker at both national and international conferences, Prof. Akanbi is a member of numerous professional bodies, including the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria and the British Society for Parasitology.

He has published 32 research papers, many of which are extensively cited in respected global journals. His remarkable contributions have earned him several accolades, including the Best Dean of the Year Award in 2024.

Prof. Akanbi has also received numerous prestigious fellowships and grants, including the IOCD Travel Fellowship (European Union), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Fellowship (UK), and the TETFund National Research Fund Grant.
