Proprietor docked over facebook love scam, impersonation

For posing as a Medical Doctor on the internet with the intention of inducing a love relationship, a 38-year-old school proprietor, David Olugbami, has hit trouble.

Olugbami has been arraigned before an Ore Chief Magistrate Court on four counts charge and alleged impersonation.

 According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the offence between February and March, 2023 in Ore, Ondo State.

The prosecutor, Inspector Gbenga Martins informed the court that through Facebook chat, the accused claimed to be a medical doctor, with the purpose of deceiving one Patience Egbado, to fall in love with him.

He alleged that the defendant stole one UBA ATM Card and one Tecno Spark 7 Pro valued at N77,000, a cash sum N574,000 cash and using the stolen ATM Card to withdraw money and transfer same to his Union Bank Account No: 0170700989 belonging to his victim, Egbadon.

Martins also alleged that the defendant lured  Egbadon, through being his friend on the facebook to a Hotel, in an attempt to have carnal knowledge of her.

The offence contravenes Sections 484, 390(9), 509 of the criminal code Cap. 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges  against him.

Martins, therefore sought for an adjournment to enable him study the case file.

The defence counsels, Mr V. A. Akinfe, Mr P. O Daniel did not oppose the application made by the prosecutor. But they prayed the court to grant their client bail in most liberal terms.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate, O. A Omofolarin admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum.

He, however, ordered the remand of the defendant at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of his bail.

He thereafter, adjourned the case till May 23, 2023.
