Protest rocks Akungba over student’s death

A fresh graduate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has been reportedly stabbed to death by an unidentified indigene of Akungba, the host community of the institution.

The student whose identity was unknown as of press time, was stabbed in his hostel, popularly called  villa, situated around Ebenco area, when a group of indigenes stormed the place.

According to an eyewitness, the student was confirmed dead at a hospital located at Iwaro-Akoko where he was rushed to.

A report had it that the student was stabbed after declining  to give the indigenes a sum of One thousand naira (N1,000), they demanded from him.

A contrary report stated that the deceased promised to pay the indigenes that invaded the Villa N4,000, on behalf of someone who was owing them, but could not balance up before the unfortunate incident.

It was gathered that the deceased had paid N3,000 out of the money, remaining N1,000. When the indigenes stormed his villa, he begged them to give him time, but out of annoyance, they  stabbed him.

The Hope Metro gathered that some angry students of the institution had set ablaze the family house of the culprit.

While the details of the incident remained sketchy as of the time of filing this story, the culprit is currently on the run as a manhunt has been launched against him.

Some aggrieved students of the institution took to the streets to protest the incident. But the intervention of the police and school authorities averted a crisis between the students and the inhabitants.

Further information gathered revealed that the Students Union executives led by Comrade Ogunsanmi Kolade, popularly known as Multiple, are doing everything possible to calm the situation.

The matter had been reported at the Akungba Police Station and the policemen are currently in search of the culprit and his accomplices  to ensure they face the music.

Confirming the incident, Ondo Police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said she was yet to get full details.

She said the student was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to.

“An indigene had an issue with a student and one thing led to the other, and he stabbed the student which resulted in the student’s death. Students took to the streets to protest, and the corpse has been deposited at the morgue by the police. Meanwhile, the students mobilized themselves to the suspect mother’s house and set it ablaze, police n people are there to put off the fire.”

As of the time of filing this report, the management of the institution was yet to release any statement.
