The State Project Coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) in Benue State, Mr Stephen Numbeve, has disclosed plans to significantly boost rural road infrastructure in the state.
Speaking to The Hope on Tuesday in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, Mr Numbeve stated that the project aims to positively impact the lives of rural dwellers, particularly farmers across various communities in the 23 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
Mr Numbeve revealed that he recently met with relevant stakeholders to discuss a collaborative effort between the World Bank and the Nigerian government. The focus of this partnership, he noted, is to improve social amenities across the state.
Highlighting the challenges caused by abandoned roads in the past, Numbeve stressed the importance of maintaining rural roads.
To address this, two new agencies have been established: the Rural Access Road Agency (RARA) and the State Roads Fund. These agencies will ensure that rural roads remain safe and accessible.
According to him, “The introduction of RARA and the State Roads Fund is a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by rural communities in Benue State.
By providing adequate maintenance, these agencies will help to prevent the deterioration of rural roads and ensure that they remain usable throughout the year.”
Mr Numbeve further announced plans to construct approximately 535 kilometres of rural roads this year.
“This project is supported by the state government, which has already committed around ₦1.5 billion as its counterpart funding,” he said.
The construction of new rural roads is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s economy.
“By providing better access to markets and other economic opportunities, these roads will help to improve the livelihoods of rural communities,” he added.
He explained that the project is part of a broader effort to enhance rural infrastructure across Nigeria.
It is being implemented in several states, including Benue, with support from the World Bank and other international partners.
Mr Numbeve reiterated that the initiative has the potential to transform the lives of rural dwellers in Benue State.
“By providing better access to markets, economic opportunities, and social services, the project will help to improve the livelihoods of Benue people,” he concluded.
