Rainstorm wreaks havoc, destroys schools, churches in Ondo

Residents of Eleyewo, Ilu Abo, Bolorunduro, and other communities in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State are counting their losses following a devastating rainstorm that struck on Monday evening.

The heavy downpour, which began around 6:30 p.m., lasted for hours, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Although no lives were lost, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed as the rain, accompanied by strong winds, wreaked havoc on homes, schools, churches, and businesses.

Many residents were left in shock as they watched their roofs being ripped off, fences collapsing, and electrical infrastructure being damaged.

One of the worst-hit areas was Ilu Abo, where the Local Authority (LA) Primary School suffered extensive damage.

The storm tore off the roof of the school building, leaving classrooms exposed to the elements.

Similarly, the Redeemed Christian Church of God in the area had its iron roofing sheets and ceiling destroyed, while the fence of Possibility Church collapsed under the force of the storm.

Victims of the disaster shared harrowing accounts of their losses. Mr. Lukmon Haruna, a shop owner, described how he helplessly watched his business get destroyed.

“It was just too heavy, and we couldn’t salvage anything while the downpour lasted. Over 20 houses and churches were destroyed by the rain. So, we are begging Mr. Governor (Lucky Aiyedatiwa) and other philanthropists to assist us,” he lamented.

Many affected residents are now seeking urgent intervention from the state government, humanitarian organizations, and well-meaning individuals to help rebuild their homes and businesses.

The devastation has left many without shelter, and the communities are hoping for swift relief to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
