Following havoc caused by recent rainstorms in some parts of the Ondo state, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has directed that all public schools affected by the storms be renovated with immediate effect.

One of the affected schools, St David Primary school, Ijomu, Akure, has been deserted by pupils of the schools as it was badly affected by recent rainstorms, destroying about nine classes, disrupting academic activities.

In an interview with newsmen in Akure yesterday, the Chairman Ondo state Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB,  Victor Olabimtan, disclosed that Governor Akeredolu had approved the release of funds for immediate renovation of the affected schools.

Olabimtan said some schools affected in Ilara-Mokin and other parts of the state would be attended to and students would commence normal academic activities soon.

The SUBEB chairman described the rainstorms as unfortunate, adding that the state government would not relent in making sure that all schools are in good shape for learning at all times.

He said “we have commenced renovation of the schools affected by the rainstorm and I can assure you that the schools and structures would be put in proper shape within few days.

We have directed that a temporary measure should be put in place. The pupils in the affected block have been merged with other classes, though, it is a very difficult situation.

“It is not a good thing at all but that is the only thing we can do in the meantime, because the students need to learn under conducive atmosphere and we are approaching the raining season”

“But in the meantime, we have to merge some classes in order to accommodate the children displaced in the affected classrooms. We request for repair of the building as soon as possible to enable the displaced children return to their classrooms for effective teaching and learning activity”.
